Basic Mahjong Rules

Tiles & Suits

• There are three suits: Bamboos, Characters, Circles
• Each suit has 1-9 Tiles with four copies of each tile
• The Honours - 4 copies of each : Winds (North, South, East and West) and Dragons (Red, White and Green)

A Basic Mahjong Winning Hand Consists of

• 4 sets of three tiles
• 1 pair
• All tiles MUST be the same suit for Basic Mahjong
• One set may be a Chow (a run of 3 tiles)
• Any set may be subsituted for a set of IDENTICAL Honour tiles (eg. 3 Red Dragons)

You are dealt 13 tiles and win when the 14th completes a legal hand.

There are over 30 Winning Mahjong hands in this game.

If you claim the chow from the previous player you must play Basic Mahjong

Why This Game Exists

Mahjong brings people together. I teach social Mahjong for free and built this app because players kept saying they couldn’t find a Western Mahjong game to assist with learning various hands.

This allows people all over the world learn and practice over 30 Mahjong hands so they can feel comfortable when they play socially.

About the Developer

I’m not a professional programmer — I only learnt to program recently when I was bored being stuck at home.

I hope to continue to update and improve with time.
